Why Calendula Is So Good for Skin
Calendula is one of those herbs that earns a permanent spot in your medicine cabinet. It’s especially known for topical skin healing and calming irritated skin.
Calendula oil is commonly used for:
- Acne-prone or inflamed skin
- Eczema, rashes, and minor burns
- Sunburn and skin abrasions
- Redness, dryness, and compromised skin barriers
Because it’s so gentle, it works beautifully as a face oil recipe and even as a base for herbal hair oil blends.

Why Sunflower Oil Works Best for This Recipe
For this infusion, sunflower oil is more than just a neutral carrier. It’s light, absorbs easily, and doesn’t clog pores, making it ideal for facial use.
Sunflower oil benefits include:
- Naturally occurring vitamin E
- Support for skin barrier repair
- Lightweight texture compared to heavier seed oils
- Long shelf life when properly infused
You can substitute olive oil or another light seed oil, but sunflower oil is my top choice here.
Supplies Needed to Make Calendula-Infused Oil
Before you start, gather everything so the process feels simple and stress-free.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce dried calendula flowers (completely dry)
- 8 ounces sunflower oil
- ½ ounce vodka (acts as an herbal extraction intermediary)
Tools
- Coffee grinder or blender
- Glass jar with lid
- Blender
- Fine strainer or cheesecloth
- Gloves (optional but helpful)
- Dark glass bottle for storage
Step-by-Step: How to Make Calendula Oil (3-Day Method)
This is a fast herbal oil infusion method that dramatically cuts down the waiting time without sacrificing potency.
Step 1: Grind the Calendula
Grind the dried calendula flowers into a fine powder using a coffee grinder or blender. Work in small batches so it processes evenly.
If you don’t have a scale, about 1¾ cups loosely packed dried flowers equals roughly one ounce.

Step 2: Add Vodka and Rest
Place the powdered calendula into a glass jar and pour in ½ ounce of vodka.
Stir until the mixture looks like damp sand. Make sure all the plant material is evenly moistened, then cover and let it sit for 24 hours.
This step helps open the plant fibers so the oil can extract more healing compounds.

Step 3: Blend with Oil
After 24 hours, transfer the calendula mixture to a blender and add 8 ounces of sunflower oil.
Blend for a total of five minutes, using one-minute intervals to avoid overheating the motor. The blender should feel warm by the end, which helps the infusion process.

Step 4: Warm Infusion Period
Pour the blended mixture into a clean glass jar and seal it.
Place the jar in a warm spot for two additional days. A warm shelf, near a heat register, or another gently warm area works well.

Step 5: Strain the Oil
After two days, strain the oil using a fine strainer or cheesecloth.
Gently press or squeeze the herbs to extract as much oil as possible. The finished oil should be noticeably darker and richly infused.

Step 6: Store Properly
Transfer the finished calendula oil into a dark glass bottle.
Store it away from direct light and heat. When stored correctly, this herbal oil can last a year or longer.

How to Use Calendula-Infused Face Oil
This oil is incredibly versatile and gentle enough for daily use.
Try it as:
- A lightweight facial oil after cleansing
- A calming oil for acne-prone skin
- A soothing treatment for sunburn or irritation
- A base for lavender oil DIY blends
- An ingredient in turmeric oil, dandelion oil, or herbal salves
It’s also safe for use on pets for minor skin issues, which says a lot about how gentle it is.
