Aloe vera is having a major moment—and for good reason. This overnight aloe vera hair mask is the easiest thing you’ll do for soft, shiny hair that feels brand new by morning.
Whether you’re dealing with frizz, dryness, or breakage, this one-ingredient DIY mask is the low-effort, high-reward treatment your strands have been begging for.
In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how to make and apply the aloe mask, what tools you’ll need, and how it worked on my own hair (plus some tips to avoid those stubborn aloe flakes!).

Supplies You’ll Need
You probably have most of these on hand already. Here’s what you’ll need to prep and apply the aloe vera mask:
- 1 large aloe vera leaf (fresh is best)
- Sharp knife
- Cutting board
- Magic Bullet Blender (or a regular kitchen mixer)
- Pantyhose (for straining)
- Small mixing bowl (with a spout if possible)
- Applicator bottle or squeeze bottle
- Plastic hair cap
- Optional: satin bonnet or t-shirt towel for overnight use
Step-by-Step: How to Make the Aloe Vera Hair Mask
Step 1: Slice and Scoop the Aloe
Start by washing your aloe vera leaf. Then:
- Cut off the white base and pointy sides of the leaf.
- Cut the leaf into 3–4 smaller sections.
- Use your knife to carefully remove the flat side of the skin.
- Scoop or carve out the clear, gel-like flesh from the other side.
This is your fresh aloe gel—aka hair growth gold.
Step 2: Blend It Smooth
Place the aloe chunks into a blender or Magic Bullet and blend until it becomes a smooth, frothy liquid.
Step 3: Strain Out the Pulp
This step is key. If you skip it, you might end up with aloe flakes stuck in your hair. Use pantyhose or a nut milk bag to strain the mixture into your bowl.
Step 4: Pour It Into Your Applicator Bottle
Once strained, pour the gel into an applicator bottle (a clean, recycled one works great).
Step-by-Step: How to Apply the Mask
Step 1: Clean Your Hair
Start with freshly cleansed hair. You want your scalp to be clean so it can really absorb all the benefits of the aloe vera.
Step 2: Apply to the Scalp
Part your hair in sections and apply the aloe directly to your scalp first. Use your fingers to massage it in—this boosts circulation and supports hair growth.
Step 3: Work It Into the Length
After saturating your scalp, pour a bit of the aloe gel into your hands and rake it through the rest of your hair.
Step 4: Twist & Clip
Twist each section, clip it up, and repeat until your whole head is treated.
Step 5: Wrap It Up Overnight
To seal in moisture overnight, do the “baggy method”:
- Cover with a plastic shower cap.
- Add a warm towel on top.
- Wrap it all in a t-shirt towel or bonnet to sleep in.
The Next Morning
In the morning, remove all your layers and rinse your hair thoroughly. If you still feel aloe residue, follow with a gentle conditioner or co-wash.
You’ll notice your hair feels incredibly soft and your scalp feels super clean. It may take a few treatments to see long-term growth, but even after one use, you’ll feel the difference.
